FB4-Ringvorlesung: „How to measure sustainability?“

Im Rahmen der Ringvorlesung des Sommersemesters begrüßt die Wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Fakultät am 30. Juni ab 18:00 Uhr Professor Markus Berger von der Universität Twente. Die Reihe, die Vorträge in deutscher und englischer Sprache umfasst, trägt den Titel: „Circular Economy and Sustainable Development“. Über das Thema des Abends

The concepts of “Circular Economy” and “Sustainable Development” are widely accepted and supported by consumers, economy and governments. However, how can we measure if a company is really acting in a sustainable way or if a product is really “greener” than another one? And is it always “sustainable” to increase the use of secondary materials and recycling rates? To address these questions in a robust and reliable way, the entire life span of products and the global value chains of companies need to be analyzed and multiple aspects of sustainability (carbon and water footprints, value added, social aspects, etc.) need to be considered. This lecture will provide an overview on the widely applied and recognized method of Life Cycle Assessment and illustrate it’s application in the field of electric mobility and battery technology.

Über den Referenten

Markus Berger is leading the Multidisciplinary Water Management group at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Before he worked as a senior researcher at the Chair of Sustainable Engineering at TU Berlin and lead the Team Industrial Ecology. In research and education he engages in sustainability assessments of products and organizations along their life cycles. With a research focus on the water footprint, Professor Berger analyses the water use hidden in products‘ global supply chains and develops sollutions to mitigate water stress at local hotspots. He has a multidisciplinary background in civil engineering as well as envirionmental technology and management.
